Tutoring

KOE and LAB University of Applied Sciences jointly organise tutoring. The main responsibility for organising tutoring lies with the tutoring coordinators of LAB UAS, but the tutoring coordinators of KOE work together to develop tutoring.

New students meet the tutors for the first time during the selection tests and the tutors are involved in the daily life of the new students throughout the first year of study. For example, tutors give new students a tour of the campus and introduce them to each other.

There are three different types of tutoring, each of which is sure to suit everyone who wants to be a tutor.Tutors are the guides for new students, especially at the beginning of their studies, when they are often new not only to the school but also to the city they are studying in, and in some cases to the country they are studying in.

Peer tutors are present at entrance exams, orientation week, show you around the school and campus, advise you where to find what you need, group activities and answer questions. The tutors' tasks continue throughout the first year of study, for example in the form of tutor quizzes, and they are often part of the groups' communication channels, so they can also be approached by message.

Exchange tutors, or more commonly known as exchange tutors, are there to help exchange students coming to LAB. Exchange tutors keep in touch with exchange students before they arrive in Finland and are often the first Finnish friends they make. The exchange tutor often meets the exchange student in the study city and helps, for example, with picking up the keys. The tutor helps the exchange student to settle in Finland, guides them through practical matters, advises them, guides them and answers their questions. The exchange tutor is able and willing to speak English (or other languages) and is interested in getting to know exchange students.

Degree tutors are a combination of peer and international tutors. Degree tutors tutor new international students studying in international degree programmes. They help new students with practical matters and with their studies, they help students to get to know and adapt to a new environment and possibly to a completely new culture. Tutors also help the multicultural group to work together and the students to get to know each other.

The main tutor plays a guiding role for tutors in his/her field. Each field has its own head tutor (degree, exchange, Finnish degrees specified). The main tutor's tasks include contacting tutor teachers, planning activities for orientation weeks and allocating tutors to starting groups. The role of the head tutor also includes mentoring tutors in their field.

I want to become a tutor, how do I do it?

Great to hear! Tutoring is fun.

You can apply to become a tutor through the LAB Tutor Search, which takes place twice a year. These take place in September-October and February-March. All those who fill in the application form will be invited to a tutor interview and tutors will be selected on the basis of the interviews. All tutors attend tutor training courses, where they acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to become a tutor.
The minimum period of tutoring is two semesters, after which three credits are possible. Anyone can become a tutor!
